Short Story

Rotaract Club of Ho

Dodome is a rural community of 3,306 and has 4 catchment areas namely; Teleafenu, Tsikor, Avexa and Awime. The economic activities is mainly subsistence farming. They have women in their fertile age (WIFA) as 793, expected pregnancy for the year as 132 and children 0-5 years as 528. The community has a health centre established in 1983 through the initiative and self-help spirit of the people under the Primary Health Care Programme of the government by then. The local health center since established has never been renovated, and currently has 3 health staff.

The health centre has 3 unit blocks which comprises OPD, stores and RCH without a maternity block meanwhile 180 maternity cases are treated every month and 11 children are delivered monthly in the communities. There is no maternity ward or routine postpartum or well-baby care available locally; the service of a midwife from Dzologbogame Health Centre is required ones every month for antenatal clinic (ANC) at the health facility. Due to unavailability of a maternity ward ANC is conducted at RCH unit hence mothers are obliged to travel to the nearest comprehensive health care available in the provincial capital (Dzologbogame Health Centre and Kpedze Polyclinic) which is 21km and 30km respectively. The health centre equally lacks necessary equipment and conditions to render effective services to pregnant women, thus childbearing women had to travel a minimum of 45km to the Regional Capital-Ho for maternal health care. Many pregnancy cases often turn fatal before they could arrive at the Volta Regional Capital to access healthcare.

Problem
The community, in recognition of the above mentioned challenge, established the Health Center in 1983 on self-help basis but due to the lack of a maternity ward, access to health care delivery by childbearing women is still very poor. Inability to access quality medical services by pregnant women leads to poor child birth and terrible incidents such as:
● Maternal and infant morbidity
● Stressful delivery
● Lack of appropriate conditions, tools and hands for safe delivery (i.e. health assistance always have to improvise and it is very dangerous to the health of mothers and babies)
● Qualified medical personnel (Midwives) reject postings to the Dodome Community

Currently the block work of the project is done and what we are left to is the roofing and furnishing for the building .
Base on this that is why the requested amount is $10,000. Also u can check in the bill of quantities attached and see the total cost of the project.
